Sometimes I wake up really puffy in the face. As it’s not every morning, how do I know what’s causing it?
Face puffiness could be due to a variety of factors. If it isn't persistent I would keep a food and beverage diary to see what the patterns are. The most common culprits are alcohol especially wine, gluten, dairy, and high sodium foods. Other potential causes include seasonal allergies or excess cortisol (stress hormone).
If I’m feeling backed-up and don’t want to take a laxative, what can I eat that will help relieve this feeling so I can visit the bathroom?
Foods that are rich in magnesium can help to relax the bowels or taking a supplement like magnesium glycinate. These foods include green leafy vegetables, avocado, legumes, and nuts.
I foam roll + do yoga but still find my muscles are tight as I run quite a bit. What can I do to help this?
I highly recommend a combination of deep tissue massage and acupuncture to lengthen muscles, especially in hips and legs. This will disrupt the muscle memory that likely tends towards tightness. Along with adequate hydration, I also recommend evaluating how long they are sitting during the day. This will tighten hip flexors and make recovery after exercise more challenging.
During winter months my Brain Fog tends to increase, alongside some seasonal anxiety. What can I do to clear the fog while I'm waiting for summer?
If you notice an increase in brain fog I would examine the diet. We tend to eat more starchy, comfort foods during the winter, especially if the temperature drops. If you already have an underlying digestive dysfunction, this can worsen with certain foods. Worth it to get your microbiome checked out by a functional medicine practitioner as well as micronutrients levels like Vitamin D and magnesium which you may be deficient in.
