Our stance on sustainability

Our stance on sustainability

Our founding principle was to create supplements that do not harm people or the planet because we believe in interconnecting all aspects of our health: when we treat our physical, mental, social and environmental well-being as one ecosystem, we can start to create significant changes. As such, we are dedicated to continuing to strive for solutions to sustainability that are as effective as our formulas.

WHAT WE DO NOW

+ Sustainable sourcing and production

Our ingredients are sourced sustainably from around the world and wherever possible they are organic. Not only have organic foods been proven to be more nutrient-dense, but organic farming also supports the health of the soil and those who cultivate the crop.

We tend to work with standardized ingredients wherever possible. For example, our Ashwagandha extract in MOOD, KSM-66, is sourced using Good Agricultural And Collection Practices (GACP) in Rajasthan, India. KSM-66 is the only Ashwagandha extract in the world boasting its own farms, production facilities, testing laboratories, research center and distribution. Working in this way ensures we not only receive a better quality product, but we also know that the farmers and workers at every stage are supported and treated fairly.

Each of our partner facilities are GMP certified (Good Manufacturing Practice) and NSF Approved. Our primary lab in the USA runs off a solar energy system. The 1,820 panel system provides enough energy to power over 35 homes every year. This is equivalent to recycling over eight million cans of soda, planting 30,000 trees and taking 52 cars off the road every year.

+ Product innovation

BARRIER CULTURE was developed specifically to support the health of our skin and the health of our environment in tandem, rebuilding the skin’s microbiome, protecting from pollution and reducing waste. The 2-step cleanser and moisturizer routine is designed to replace complex multi-step routines that contribute to the 95 billion units of cosmetic packaging that end up in landfills and worsen air pollution.

+ Recyclable packaging

95% of our packaging is made from infinitely recyclable glass with non-toxic ink, with 3% (the paper and card) easily recyclable through your household recycling program, and 2% made up of lids, pumps and pipettes which we can recycle through our in-house program for you (read on to find out more).

You might notice that our boxes aren’t smooth and shiny or soft to the touch like some brands—this is because we don’t laminate them. Generally, laminates are plastic-based which can impact the recyclability of paper since plastic and paper run through different waste streams.

The paper we use for our boxes is 30% post-consumer recycled which is Green Seal Certified, FSC Certified and is manufactured with 100% renewable energy. The paper is processed chlorine-free, significantly reducing the amount of harmful waste produced in manufacturing and the ink we print with is vegetable-based soy ink.

+ Refill Pouches

Refill Pouches for PREBIOTIC + PROBIOTIC, DEBLOAT+ and SKIN FILTER are currently available to choose for one-time purchases and are automatically sent every month if you subscribe to top-up the signature glass jar that arrives in your first delivery.

Made from recyclable plastic which is 28% Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) content and can easily be recycled through all household programs. They cut the average packaging weight by 75%, resulting in a reduced carbon footprint and reduced packaging waste. Look out for more Refill Pouches coming soon.

+ Same-Day Shipping

We offer free same-day shipping in New York, Los Angeles, Brooklyn and San Francisco to reduce our carbon emissions.

+ Charity Initiatives

We continue to form partnerships with organizations that support social and environmental values. Since July 2020, 1% of all online revenue is donated to our charity partner charity: water, which will go towards funding five clean water and sanitation projects in developing countries. These projects make an impact on every aspect of life; improving health, increasing access to food, growing local economies, and helping children spend more time in school. Stay tuned for updates on these.
